Connecting Occasionally – March 3, 2014

Hello Members,

I often wait until the 15th of each month for the newsletter, but I have a couple items that are time sensitive and I would like to call your attention them below.

ETFO Workload Survey

In the last round of bargaining, ETFO was successful in obtaining an agreement (Memorandum of Understanding – MOU) with the provincial government that included a commitment to study teacher workload and professionalism in the English public elementary system. The study is funded by the Ministry of Education and includes an advisory committee comprised of representatives from ETFO, the Ministry and the Ontario Public School Boards Association.

For ETFO to be able to identify solutions to teachers’ concerns about their workload, and to understand teachers’ views of their professionalism, it is important to have information collected from as many ETFO members as possible.

As part of this study, you are being asked to complete an on-line survey about your work. The survey has been developed by Directions Evidence and Policy Research Group, which has been contracted by the Ministry to conduct the study. The survey will take about 40-50 minutes to complete and will be available until March 14, 2014. You will be able to save a partially completed survey and go back to it at a later time.

In the survey, you will be asked to identify your school and school board, but not your name. No information from your response will be shared with ETFO, the Ministry, or your school board. The information is required because, after the survey is complete and its data analyzed, a number of schools will be identified as “high satisfaction” schools based on teacher responses. The second phase of the study will involve telephone interviews with some teachers from those schools, the principals, and selected board administrators to try to determine what leads to that satisfaction. These telephone interviews will be conducted from March 31, 2014 to mid-April, 2014.
ETFO believes your work is very important and is hoping you will work with the Ministry’s researchers to document what you do, where you find satisfaction or barriers in your work, and what could make a difference in your professional life.
